Early Life
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was born on August 22, 1967, in Islington, a district in London, England. His parents were both Yoruba Nigerians who had moved to the United Kingdom for their studies. Shortly after he was born, his parents made a difficult decision. They gave him up to a white working-class foster family living in Tilbury, Essex, so that he could grow up in what they thought would be a better environment. Adewale’s foster parents raised around ten African children, including two of his sisters, in the same household.
Even though his foster family was kind and cared for him, Adewale felt different because of the colour of his skin. He grew up in a town where most people were white, and he faced bullying and racism from a young age.
