Hannatu grew up in Katsina. Her father cared deeply about education, even selling kolanut to help pay for his children’s school fees. She often said that her family had little money, but her father made big sacrifices so that she could go to good schools.

Educational Background

Hannatu studied law in the United Kingdom. She earned three higher degrees:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Buckingham.
  • A Master’s degree in Marine Affairs Law from the University of Cardiff, in Wales.
  • A Master’s degree in Oil & Gas Law from the University of Aberdeen, in Scotland.

She also began working toward a Doctorate degree part‑time, though she has not yet publicly announced completion.

After her studies in the UK, she returned to Nigeria and was called to the Nigerian Bar. She also qualified as a Solicitor in England and Wales and became a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Career

Legal Career

Hannatu started her legal career in the UK and Nigeria. She worked as a litigation lawyer and legal advisor in private firms. She joined the chambers of the late Chief Clement Akpamgbo, who was a former Attorney General of the Federation. She also helped with the Oputa Panel on Human Rights Violations, led by Barrister Bala Na’Allah (Sportshub).

In 2005, she founded her own law firm called Hanney Musawa & Associates, focusing on marine affairs, oil & gas, and arbitration. There, she leads a team of legal professionals serving clients in Nigeria and beyond.

Political Career

Hannatu became involved in politics during the 2003 election petition between Muhammadu Buhari and Olusegun Obasanjo. She was on the prosecution team, offering legal representation in court.

In 2011, she ran for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent the Musawa/Matazu federal constituency in Katsina State. Although she did not win, she remained active in politics and public advocacy.

In 2022–2023, she served as the Deputy Spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) during President Bola Tinubu’s campaign. She spoke for the party and helped share its messages with Nigerians.

Ministerial Appointment

On 16 August 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed her as Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy. This was a brand‑new ministry created to oversee Nigeria’s cultural heritage and creative industries.

Before becoming minister, she served as Special Adviser on Culture and Entertainment Economy early in 2023. As minister, she works to encourage Nigerian art and culture and helps develop creative jobs and tourism across the country.

In May 2024, she was also appointed as a member of the Creative Africa Advisory Group of Afreximbank, a regional bank. Her role is to help guide artistic and creative finance across Africa and support cultural growth.

Personal Life & Controversies

Personal Life

Hannatu is married, and she has children. She practices Islam and belongs to the Hausa‑Fulani ethnic group from Katsina State. Public sources mention her marriage but do not give many details about her husband or children.

One article reported she was once married to Samad Rabiu, a famous Nigerian businessman and one of the richest men in Nigeria. However, official biographies now say they are divorced or that the match is not confirmed. There is uncertainty about those details.

She has also written books, including The Missing Pages and The Chronicles of the Last Days, showing her interest in writing and storytelling.

Controversies

In 2020, then‑President Muhammadu Buhari nominated her to serve on the Board of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) as a national commissioner representing the North West. However, the Senate rejected her nomination because she could not show that she had completed her NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) year. This caused some media attention and questions about her qualifications.

When she was screened by the Senate for minister in 2023, there were again concerns raised by the group HURIWA (Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria). They asked whether she had still not completed NYSC even while serving in government. Some people felt she should be asked more about her service records.

Aside from this, she does not have any major corruption scandals or legal cases against her. Many sources say she has kept a low profile and focused on professional work rather than controversies.

She also once had a YouTube channel and Snapchat, though these are used less now.

On these platforms, she writes about unity, peace, creative economy, women’s rights, and culture in Nigeria. She sometimes shares spoken‑word articles or short videos explaining her work or beliefs.

Net Worth

Hannatu Musawa has made money from her legal career, her writing, her political roles, and her ministerial job. Several estimates say her net worth is around US $1,000,000.

Some sources say she may be worth as much as $700,000, but both figures mean she is comfortable, though not extremely rich by national standards. Most agree her wealth comes from her law firm, her books, and her earnings as a government official.
