Early Life

Ben Murray‑Bruce was born on February 18, 1956 in Yaba, Lagos State. His full name is Benedict Murray‑Bruce. He comes from the Ijaw ethnic group in Bayelsa State. His father, Mullighan Murray‑Bruce, worked as a civil servant, and his mother, Margaret Murray‑Bruce, was a homemaker and small businesswoman. He grew up in a large family with many brothers and sisters. His parents taught him the value of hard work and education from an early age. He went to Our Lady of Apostles Primary School in Yaba, Lagos, and then to St. Gregory’s College in Obalende for secondary school. He grew up knowing that education would help him succeed in life.

Educational Background

After secondary school, Ben went to the United States to study at Simpson College in Iowa, and then at Iowa State University. Finally, he attended the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. In 1979, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. His time abroad gave him new ideas about business and media. He had wanted to be a professor of history at one point, but he found that marketing and business suited his energy and talents better.

Career

Ben Murray‑Bruce started his career in the 1980s. In 1980, he and his wife launched a magazine called Silverbird Magazine. Just a few years later, he began to organize events like concerts and beauty pageants. In 1983, he promoted the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant. From 1986 to 1994, he organized the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) pageant. This contest became famous for sending Nigeria’s first African Miss World, Agbani Darego, to win that title in 2001. Under his leadership, the Silverbird Group expanded into many areas. In 1997, he started Rhythm FM, a popular radio station. In 2004, he launched Silverbird Television (STV), one of the first private TV stations in Nigeria. He also began Silverbird Cinemas, building the first cinema multiplex in Nigeria at the Silverbird Galleria in Lagos. Over time, Silverbird opened many cinemas, shopping malls, radio and TV stations in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Bayelsa, and also in Ghana and Liberia.

Between 1999 and 2003, Ben Murray‑Bruce served as Director‑General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). He was later appointed Chairman of the Board of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) from about 2013 to 2015. He also joined many boards like the National Arts Theatre Management Board, the Film Censors Board, and the Nigerian Film Corporation. At the same time, he served as Executive Director of the Black Music Association of America alongside icons like Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder.

He also created the Silverbird Man of the Year Awards in 2005 to honour Nigerians making great contributions in different fields. In 2015, Ben Murray‑Bruce entered politics. He was elected as Senator for Bayelsa East under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In the Senate, he became well known for his series called “Common Sense” where he suggested personal and national ideas in short, easy messages. Nigerians called him the “Common Sense Senator” for speaking clearly and simply about government matters. He served until 2019, choosing not to run again because of local party arrangements. More recently, in 2022, Silverbird Group signed a partnership with Afreximbank to build the Ben Murray‑Bruce Studios and Film Academy in Eko Atlantic, Lagos. This huge project will be West Africa’s largest film and TV studio combined with a school to train filmmakers. The deal is worth around US $100 million, and it aims to boost Nigeria’s creative industry by training young talent and hosting big film productions.

Personal Life

Ben Murray‑Bruce is a Christian and has been married to Evelyn Murray‑Bruce for many decades. Evelyn has actively supported his business and cultural events, especially the MBGN pageant. Together, they have four children: three sons—Cody, Jonathan, and Jared—and a daughter, Jasmine. His family lives between Nigeria and abroad, and his children are sometimes involved in Silverbird group activities.
