Early Life

Patoranking, born Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie on May 27, 1990, in Ebute Metta, Lagos, Nigeria, experienced a modest upbringing, sharing a single room with his parents and five siblings. His roots in the Ebute Metta community laid the foundation for his determination to create a better future for himself. Patoranking attended Citizen Comprehensive College in Epe, Lagos, and later enrolled at Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School in Iponri. He got admission to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana but didn’t complete the education. 

Introduction to Performing Arts

His journey into the world of performing arts began with street jam and carnival dancing. In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Express, Patoranking revealed that his stage name was given to him by a Jamaican artist he met at Alpha Beach in Lagos. Inspired by musical legends such as Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Lucky Dube, and others, he described his music as a morally inclined variation of dancehall addressing socio-political issues.

Breakthrough with “Alubarika” and Musical Style

Patoranking’s breakthrough came on September 12, 2013, with the release of the audio and video for “Alubarika.” The song, meaning “God’s Blessings,” featured vocals from Timaya and became a summary of his life as a musician. The accompanying music video, shot by AJE Films, played a pivotal role in building his fan base and establishing collaborations with established artists.

Wilmer Album and International Success

Patoranking, proud father to his daughter Wilmer, named his 2019 album after her. Released on May 24, the album became a success, resonating not only across Africa but also in the international market. Patoranking’s talent has not gone unnoticed, with numerous nominations and wins at various award ceremonies. In 2016, he received the AFRIMMA award for Best Dancehall Artist for “No Kissing Baby.” Other accolades include Best New Act at MTVbase Awards and Best Afropop Song at Tooxclusive Awards for “My Woman My Everything.” The Headies 2014 recognized him with nominations for “Girlie O Remix” and “Emergency,” with a win for the latter in collaboration with Wizz Pro, Skales, and Runtown.

Wife and kids

Patoranking has been linked with Ghanaian TV personality Joselyn Dumas and Nigerian singer Yemi Alade. His relationship with Yemi was later clarified as a rumor, with pictures from a traditional wedding being part of a music video cameo. He is currently unmarried but has two kids. 

In August 2018, Patoranking welcomed his first child, Wilmer Okorie, with businesswoman Leila Stone. He is also a father to a second child, Welda Okorie.
