Patoranking, born Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie on May 27, 1990, in Ebute Metta, Lagos, Nigeria, experienced a modest upbringing, sharing a single room with his parents and five siblings. His journey into the world of performing arts began with street jam and carnival dancing. In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Express, Patoranking revealed that his stage name was given to him by a Jamaican artist he met at Alpha Beach in Lagos. Inspired by musical legends such as Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Lucky Dube, and others, he described his music as a morally inclined variation of dancehall addressing socio-political issues.
Breakthrough with “Alubarika” and Musical Style
Patoranking’s breakthrough came on September 12, 2013, with the release of the audio and video for “Alubarika.” The song, meaning “God’s Blessings,” featured vocals from Timaya and became a summary of his life as a musician.
