Born as John Taylor on April 16, 1963, in West Kingston, Jamaica, Chaka Demus started his musical journey in the vibrant reggae scene of Kingston. His introduction to the music industry came through Prince Jammy, who gave him the opportunity to DJ on his sound system. In 1985, he released his debut single, “Increase Your Knowledge,” produced by Jammy. Despite initial obscurity, his talent was recognized by fellow musicians, notably Yellowman and Admiral Bailey, setting the stage for his rise in the reggae scene.
The release of “Everybody Loves The Chaka” in the same year, for the Scorpio label, marked a turning point. The 1989 album, “The Original Chaka ‘Watch me Ride,'” further solidified his presence in the reggae landscape.
Mainstream Success
Chaka Demus’ career took a significant turn in 1991 when he partnered with Pliers (Everton Bonner). This collaboration resulted in a highly successful period between 1993 and 1997, marked by hit singles and a chart-topping album in the UK. Notable tracks from this era include the iconic “Murder She Wrote.”
The duo briefly reunited in 2007 for the track “Need Your Lovin,” performed at the American Music Awards alongside Alicia Keys. Their album “So Proud” was released in 2008. Chaka Demus also ventured into solo work with the release of “DJ Spirit” in the same year.
Later Career
Chaka Demus continued to make significant contributions to the reggae scene. He established his own record label, Bright Star, where he released music by his son, known by the stage name Marvellous. The artist maintained an enduring partnership with Pliers, recording a new album in 2012 with guest appearances from Pliers, Marvellous, and Freddie McGregor.
In August 2013, Chaka Demus released “Second Coming” on the Fire and Ice label, a venture he co-owns with Winston Solomon.
