Samson Uche Mogekwu, known as Samsong, was born on November 30, 1974, in Delta State, Nigeria. He is a Nigerian Gospel Artist and Minister, and he is the seventh of nine children. His nickname, ‘Samsong,’ originated from the need to distinguish him from three of his friends who were also named ‘Sam’ during his school days.
Early Life and Education
Samsong discovered his passion for singing during his high school years and adopted the name Samsong. He pursued his higher education at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, where he majored in Accounting.
After completing his primary and secondary education, Samsong pursued a degree in Accountancy at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State. His initial aspiration was to become the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, but he later transitioned into music after working in both the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Golf Bank without finding satisfaction.
Music Career
Samsong, along with a quartet named Praise Creation, signed with Ivory Music Label and released their debut album, “Best of Life,” in 1996. The group eventually disbanded, leading Samsong to embark on a solo career. In 2002, he released his debut solo album, “Count Your Blessings,” which earned him The Psalmist Award in the same year.
Awards
Following this success, his second album, “Still Counting,” was released in 2004, where he received the “Best Male Vocalist of the Year” Award at Today’s Music Award in 2004 and the “Best Male Vocalist of The Year” Award in 2005 at The Amen Awards. In 2005, he won the “Best Video of The Year” Award at the Vigoma Awards. Uche’s third album, “The World of My Dreams,” was launched in 2007 and featured a remake of the renowned hit “One Love” by Onyeka Onwenu, with whom he performed a duet. The album also included a duet with Styl-Plus titled “Live Right,” and he was honored with the Grace Honorary Award for Excellence that same year.
In 2008, Uche received a nomination for the “Best Gospel Artist” at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) in New York City. He embarked on an international tour to promote his music, touring countries like South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Germany. In Germany, he recorded and performed with the German gospel producer Chris Lass.
His most recent headlining tour took place in August 2009, during which he visited the island of Seychelles and was welcomed by Vice President Joseph Belmont.
