Onoriode Ebiere Ariyo, who is professionally known as Onos Ariyo, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She is widely recognized for her critically acclaimed song “Alagbara,” which was both written and produced by Nigerian music producer Wilson Joel. In September 2018, she gained further recognition by being listed among the Global Top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD).

Early Life & Education

Onos was born on October 1, 1984 in Delta State, Southern Nigeria. She completed her primary and secondary education there and then pursued higher education at Delta State University, Abraka, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in French. Onos discovered her passion for singing during her primary school years and was actively involved in various choirs and musical groups. In 2004, she relocated to Lagos, where she embarked on her professional music journey, recording her first official single, “Dance,” produced by FLO.

Music career

Following the successful release of her debut single, “Dance,” Onos went on to headline numerous gospel concerts in Nigeria, including the renowned “The Experience – Lagos,” recognized as the world’s largest gospel concert. She shared the stage with notable international gospel artists like Travis Greene, Kirk Franklin, and Donnie McClurkin during these events.

In 2010, Onos released her debut album titled “Keep Moving,” which featured songs such as “Dance” and “Na Your Love.” Her breakthrough came with the release of her 2014 album “No Limits,” which included hit tracks like “Alagbara” and “Everything Has Changed.” The success of the album, particularly the single “Alagbara,” earned her nominations for several gospel music awards.

In 2015, she became the Nigerian coordinator for the Women of African Origin in Music Ministry (WAOMM), a platform through which she mentored and supported aspiring female gospel artists. In 2012, Onos initiated “For the Love of the Season,” a music and style show that brought together the fashion and music industries. In 2018, she began hosting a monthly live worship event called “B R E A T H E.”

In 2017, she released her third studio album, “Songs from the Place of Prayer,” which received rave reviews. On July 28, 2019, she released her fourth studio album, “Breathe,” on the music streaming service Boomplay.

Awards and Recognition

Onos has garnered multiple award nominations throughout her music career. In 2012, she won the award for Best Female Vocalist at the Nigeria Gospel Music Awards and repeated this achievement at the Crystal Awards in 2013. In 2015, she received the Wise Women Awards in the Woman in Music category and the Female Gospel Artist Of The Year Eloy Awards in the same year. She was honored with the Female Artist of Excellence Award at the African Gospel Music Awards (AGMMA) in the UK in 2018.

In August 2018, Onos, along with other MIPAD honorees, was hosted by the Nigerian stock exchange at the Gong closing ceremony, which was themed “Celebration of Excellence.” The event also had the former Vice President of Nigeria, Namadi Sambo, in attendance.
