Early Life
El Mafrex, originally named Mfreke Obong Ibanga, was born on May 14, 1984, in Nigeria. He grew up in Nigeria and went to the Nigerian Military School in Zaria, Kaduna State. Later, he studied physics with a focus on electronics at the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2006. Wanting to explore more, he went to Edinburgh Napier University, where he completed a master’s degree in information systems development in 2010.
The Musical Journey Begins
El Mafrex started his music journey in 2001 by creating a boy band called M.O.D. (Men of Destiny), where he was the lead singer. The group gained popularity as they toured and performed across Nigeria. Over time, the project evolved into a family-oriented one, leading to the creation of the Destiny Kids and MOD dancers.
While studying at the University of Uyo, El Mafrex formed another boy band called Da Grooves, entertaining audiences through campus gigs and performances in the surrounding areas.
Solo Aspirations and Recognition
In 2004, El Mafrex decided to go solo, calling it the “el MAFREX” project. His talent was quickly recognized when he was named Artiste of the Year by the Student Union Government of the University of Uyo in 2005. His songs “Rhythm in the Air” and “Esio Mkpo” became popular on Nigerian radio and television, with “Rhythm in the Air” being crowned “Song of the Month” on Cosmo FM Enugu.
Breakthrough and Milestones
El Mafrex’s breakthrough continued to grow. In 2012, he received consecutive nominations for Best Gospel Act at the MOBO Awards for 2012 and 2013. He won two awards at the 2012 Scottish New Music Awards, making history as the first black man to win at the SNMA.
His song “Jehovah,” a collaboration with the Christian rock band Royal Foundlings, gained over 500,000 views on YouTube in its first five months. His song “That Man from Galilee” debuted at number 49 on the iTunes UK Chart for Gospel, accumulating over a million YouTube views in its first six months.
