Obiora Nwokolobia-Agu, known by his stage name Obiora Obiwon, is a Nigerian singer, musician, songwriter, recording artist, and music minister with a strong passion for gospel music and a career that spans several genres.

Early Life

Obiora Obiwon was born in Enugu, Nigeria, on June 9, 1977. His love for music began at an early age, around the age of 5, as he sang along to HipHop and R’n’B records from his elder brother’s Audio Cassettes. His father, Sir Humphrey Nwokolobia-Agu, was a folk and classical music composer and arranger from Eastern Nigeria. By the time Obiora was 15, he had already started songwriting and performing on the local streets and at hangouts.

Education

After graduating from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 2001, where he studied Agricultural Extension, Obiora moved to Lagos in 2002 for the National Youth Service Corps. While working at a bank in Lagos, he also pursued a career in music and joined a HipHop group called Thorobreds. It was during this time that he adopted the stage name “Obiwon,” a nickname given to him by a favorite uncle from his younger years, inspired by a popular science fiction hero. The group made a significant impact, winning the Best Rap Group at the 2005 edition of Nigeria’s esteemed music award show, The HipHop World Awards (now known as The Headies).

Music Career

In 2006, Obiwon released his debut album, “Overture,” which featured the now-classic Nigerian hit ballad “Onyinye.” The pressures of a growing music career led him to resign from his banking job. His debut album earned him three nominations at the 2007 Hip Hop World Awards, and he won the Best Vocal Male Performance category. He was also honored as Nigeria’s Voice of the Decade (21st century) at the Nigeria Music Awards.

In July 2008, Obiwon underwent a spiritual transformation and announced his transition into Christian/Gospel music. He rebranded himself as “Obiora Obiwon” to create a stronger and more distinct identity for his brand. In 2009, he released his second studio album and first Christian/Gospel album, “The Rebirth,” which featured notable songs like “F.a.t.h.e.r,” “Victorious,” and “The Rebirth (Kene Gi).” One of the album’s highlights was the hit love song and wedding anthem “Obi Mu O,” dedicated to his then-fiancée.

Since transitioning to Christian/Gospel music, Obiora Obiwon has continued to minister at various churches and Christian and secular events. In 2013, he received his first gospel music award at the National Gospel Awards for the song “F.a.t.h.e.r 2.0.” In November 2013, he released the album “Gold Water,” which featured notable singles like “Testify,” “Pour Your Love,” and the urban gospel hit “Hail My King.” The album received recognition at the Crystal Awards 2014 and the 4th Annual Nigerian Gospel Music Awards (NGMA), winning multiple awards in various categories.
