Omawumi Megbele, also known by her stage name Omawumi is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress of Itsekiri ethnicity. Omawumi has been a brand ambassador for companies such as Globacom, Konga.com, and Malta Guinness. She is also a part of the campaign known as “Rise with the Energy of Africa.” Her journey to fame began in 2007 when she became the runner-up on West African Idols, a reality TV show within the Idols franchise.

Early Life & Education

Omawumi’s early life can be traced back to her birth on April 13, 1982, to Chief Dr. Frank and Mrs. Aya Megbele. 

In terms of education, she started her schooling at Nana Primary School during her early years and later attended the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. She went on to graduate with a law degree from Ambrose Alli University in 2005. After her graduation, she moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she worked at her family’s law firm, “O.S Megbele & Associates.” Additionally, she studied French at Alliance Francaise.

Music Career

Omawumi’s career took off when she participated in Idols West Africa, ultimately becoming the first runner-up in May 2007. She has since shared the stage with notable musicians like P-Square, 2face Idibia, Phyno, D’Banj, Banky W, M.I, Sasha, 9ice, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone, and Donell Jones, as well as Angélique Kidjo, among others. In September 2008, Omawumi released her debut single, “In The Music,” and followed it up with her album “Wonder Woman,” released on November 11, 2009. Her album “The Lasso of Truth” was released on April 10, 2013.

Her fourth album, “In Her Feelings,” was released on June 14, 2019. This album features a blend of Afro-fusion, Jazz, R&B, and various tracks, including “For My Baby,” “Mr. Sinnerman,” “Away,” “True Loving,” “Tabansi,” and “Green Grass.” She also released the single “Lituation” on May 22, 2020, and her fourth studio album titled “Love Deep High Life (LDHL)” in collaboration with artists like Phyno, Waje, Brymo, and Ric Hassani.

In addition to her music career, she ventured into acting. She incorporated dramatic elements into her music videos and took on roles in stage productions like the 2009 edition of V-Monologues and the Yoruba indigenous folktale and musical “Olurumbi.” Her screen debut occurred in 2010 with the film “Inale,” and she later appeared in “House of Gold” in 2013. In 2019, Omawumi became a movie producer in collaboration with Waje for the film “She Is,” directed by Eneng Enaji, which reflects the societal standards and expectations faced by successful Nigerian women.
