Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, known by her professional stage name Sinach, was born on March 30, 1972, in Nigeria. Sinach was born in Ebonyi State, Eastern Nigeria, and is the second of seven children.

Early Life & Education

Her musical journey began in 1989 when she started singing for family and friends as a hobby. During this time, she also served as a staff member and choir member at Christ Embassy, under the leadership of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. She pursued her studies in physics and graduated from the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria. Although she contemplated relocating from Nigeria after completing her university education, she received guidance from Pastor Chris Oyakhilome to remain in the country.

Music Career

Sinach’s musical journey began with her singing dreams as a child, although she didn’t actively pursue a career in music at that time. Instead, she joined the choir and worked as an administrative staff member in the Church. Sinach had penned numerous songs before releasing her debut album, “Chapter One,” in 2008. In 2008, her song “This Is Your Season” received the Song of the Year award.

Regarding her stage name, Sinach explained that she chose it from her given name, Osinachi, as it was easy to pronounce and catchy.

Sinach is a renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and senior worship leader with over three decades of experience in her field. She holds the distinction of being the first singer-songwriter to dominate the Billboard Christian Songwriter chart for a consecutive 12-week period. Her hit song “Way Maker” released in 2015 has received widespread acclaim, earning three nominations and winning the prestigious Song of the Year at the 51st GMA Dove Awards, making her the first Nigerian artist to achieve this honor.

The song has been covered by more than 60 Christian artists, including Michael W. Smith, Darlene Zschech, Leeland, Bethel Music, and Mandisa, in various languages. During the initial weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown in 2020, “Way Maker” emerged as a go-to anthem, with numerous viral videos in hospitals and parks featuring large groups of people singing the song. It claimed the No. 1 position on the Christian Copyright Licensing International top 100 chart in June 2020 and remained there through December 2020, making it the most-played song in churches across the United States that year. Sinach’s remarkable journey in music also includes receiving a Bethlehem Hall of Faith certificate of commemoration during her visit to Israel in December 2017. In September 2019, she achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African gospel artist to tour India, where she headlined concerts with thousands of enthusiastic attendees. In a recent interview with music journalist Motolani Alake of Pulse Nigeria, Sinach shared the story of how she was drawn into gospel ministry through Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s anointing.

On December 22, 2020, during the third African Entertainment Awards USA ceremony, she received the Best Gospel Artist award.

Together with her husband, Sinach launched the Joseph and Sinach Foundation, which organized its first medical outreach in Abia State, Nigeria, in collaboration with Emzor Pharmaceuticals and the State Government. This initiative provided free healthcare services to 700 individuals.
