Timi Dakolo, born on January 20, 1981, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and music producer. He gained fame by winning the first season of Idols West Africa in 2007, which earned him a recording contract with Sony BMG and other prizes.

Early Life and Education

Timi Dakolo’s early life was marked by being born in Accra, Ghana to a Nigerian father, David, and a Ghanaian mother, Norah Kimmy Head, who passed away when he was thirteen. Despite his Ghanaian birthplace, he holds a Nigerian passport and does not claim dual citizenship. He was raised in Port Harcourt by his grandmother, Ateni Dakolo, and his aunt, Susan Larry, who also served as his early singing teacher. His bond with his aunt was so strong that he chose to remain in Port Harcourt with them, declining an offer to move to Lagos with his parents.

Timi began singing in church at the age of twelve and joined the singing group Purple Love in 2003, where he was a founding member. They became a prominent fixture in the Port Harcourt club scene but disbanded in 2005 as all members pursued admission to the University of Port Harcourt. Music Career

In 2006, Timi auditioned for the reality show Idols West Africa in Calabar, Cross River State of Nigeria. His song choices were Commissioned’s “More Than I” and Lemar’s “Time to Grow.” His vocal talents impressed the judges, and he was seen as a strong contender.

Throughout the competition, Timi consistently received high votes and was never in the bottom 3. Tragically, his grandmother passed away during the competition, a week before the Top 24 performances. This emotional blow led him to draw strength from his Christian faith to persevere in the competition. Prior to participating in Idols West Africa, Timi was a student of Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.

Idols West Africa

After winning Idols West Africa in 2007, Timi Dakolo survived a random act of violence on New Year’s Day in 2008 when he was shot at the lobby of the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt. This incident, carried out by a faction of Niger Delta militants, was not targeted at Timi. He sustained a minor flesh wound and was treated and discharged the same day.

In October 2009, Timi Dakolo released his first single featuring three songs. In 2011, he released the song “There’s a Cry,” and he is currently signed with Lone Records/Now Muzik. Timi Dakolo also serves as one of the judges on The Voice Nigeria.
